I think the first step is to work together in a way we haven’t, probably with the new EV brands and the traditional auto companies. – Jim Farley, CEO of Ford

In an electrifying announcement on Twitter Spaces, Ford CEO Jim Farley and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, said that Ford owners would soon be able to recharge their EVs at one of Tesla’s 12,000 Superchargers throughout the US and Canada.

Jim Farley and Elon Musk announce their partnership live on Twitter Spaces.

As soon as next year, Ford owners will be able to purchase an adapter to enable their EVs to use Tesla’s fast-charging Superchargers.

Jim Farley said that Ford is, "totally committed," to adopting and pushing forward the NACS standard plug used at Tesla’s charging stations.

Listen to Jim Farley talk more about the partnership on CNBC’s Squawk Box.

Overcoming the cold start problem

The biggest challenge to EV adoption is the problem of convenient access to charging during long-distance travel.

Tesla has overcome the problem by creating an ecosystem of rapid charging stations throughout the globe.

Instead of taking years to build its own network of charging stations, Ford is partnering up to leapfrog into Tesla’s ecosystem.

Great products never beat great GTM. But great GTM never beats a great ecosystem.

By partnering up with Tesla, Ford is pushing forward the adoption of the NACS charging standard, and plugging into an ecosystem that will bring benefits to consumers of all EVs.

This partnership may be bringing us closer to the possibility of a Transportation as a Service (TaaS) future envisioned by the partner prophet, Jay McBain, just last month.
